What is the difference between gold filled and gold plated?
Gold Filled is constructed with a thick layer of solid gold mechanically bonded to a base metal (eg. brass, silver) with heat and pressure. Gold-Filled generally lasts much longer than most electroplated jewelry when looking for a wallet-friendly alternative to sold 14k gold.
Gold Plated jewellery consists of a very thin layer of gold being electrically charged onto a base metal or sterling silver. If sterling silver is plated in gold this can also be referred to as “Vermeil”. Gold Plated jewellery is the cheapest and lowest quality of the three metal types. Gold plating will generally wear off rather quickly and expose the brass base product. Because the layer of gold is so thin, it does not stand up to heat, water or wear over time.
